## How Much Does a Plumber Cost Per Hour in NJ?

> **Quick answer:** National cost guides put plumbers at $45 to $200 an hour: about $45 to $90 for an apprentice, $60 to $110 for a journeyman and $80 to $200 for a master plumber. Most charge a $100 to $250 service call. One 2026 New Jersey estimate puts rates at $85 to $150 an hour, highest in North Jersey. Emergency work runs 1.5 to 3 times the normal rate.

### Hourly rates by experience

| Level | Hourly rate (Angi, March 2026) |
|---|---|
| Apprentice | $45 to $90 |
| Journeyman | $60 to $110 |
| Master plumber | $80 to $200 |

A typical plumbing job costs $182 to $501, averaging $341.

### What do NJ plumbers charge?

One third-party 2026 estimate, by region:

| Region | Hourly rate |
|---|---|
| North Jersey | $110 to $150 |
| Central Jersey | $95 to $130 |
| Shore (Monmouth and Ocean) | $100 to $140 |
| South Jersey | $85 to $120 |

Treat these as rough. We found no NJ plumber that publishes its rates. Labor does cost more here: the median plumber wage in New Jersey is $37.61 an hour, about 23% above the national $30.67 (BLS data via O*NET).

### What fees come on top?

- **Service call:** $100 to $250, often covering the first hour
- **Trip fee:** $50 to $300 if you're more than about 10 miles out
- **Emergency:** average $170 an hour, plus an emergency fee of $150 to $300

### Flat rate or hourly?

Many plumbers quote flat prices for common jobs. Ask which you're getting, and what would change the price once they open the wall.

### Which of these need a permit in NJ?

None of the like-for-like replacements. New Jersey treats replacing faucets, valves, traps and fixtures, clearing clogs and repairing leaks as ordinary maintenance. See [plumbing permits](https://www.ahtown.com/guides/plumbing#plumbing-permit-nj).

### Why does a 20-minute fix cost $200?

The service call. You're paying for the trip, a licensed plumber and a stocked truck. Keep a list and have several things fixed at once.

## How Much Does It Cost to Replace a Water Heater in NJ?

> **Quick answer:** Replacing a water heater averages about $1,350, with most jobs between $880 and $1,830. A standard tank costs $600 to $2,500 installed, a tankless unit $1,400 to $3,900, and a heat pump water heater $1,200 to $3,500. In New Jersey the replacement needs a permit and inspection. PSE&G pays rebates of $400 to $750.

### Cost by type

| Type | Installed cost (Angi, July 2026) |
|---|---|
| Tank, 40 gallon | $800 to $2,300 |
| Tank, 50 gallon | $800 to $2,500 |
| Gas tank | $700 to $2,700 |
| Electric tank | $600 to $3,500 |
| Tankless | $1,400 to $3,900 |
| Heat pump water heater | $1,200 to $3,500 |

Extras: haul-away $100 to $500, expansion tank $90 to $350, permit $25 to $300. One third-party NJ estimate runs higher: $1,200 to $2,500 for a tank and $2,500 to $4,500 for tankless.

### Do you need a permit in NJ?

Yes. Replacing a water heater with one of like capacity is "minor work" under New Jersey's construction code. The plumber notifies the town before starting, files the permit application within five business days, and the town inspects within three business days of the request. A same-day emergency swap is allowed. Skipping the permit isn't.

### Are there rebates?

| PSE&G rebate | Amount |
|---|---|
| Heat pump water heater | $750 |
| Tankless | $500 |
| Gas storage tank (ENERGY STAR) | $400 |

JCP&L lists $750 for a heat pump water heater. Other NJ utilities have their own offers. The federal tax credit ended for installs after December 31, 2025.

## How Long Do Water Heaters Last? Tank vs. Tankless vs. Heat Pump

> **Quick answer:** A tank water heater lasts 10 to 15 years, a tankless unit about 20 years, and a heat pump water heater 10 to 15 years, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Tankless units are 8% to 34% more efficient than tanks. Heat pump water heaters are two to three times more efficient and save a family of four about $550 a year.

### How they compare

| Type | Lifespan | Efficiency | Installed cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storage tank | 10 to 15 years | Baseline | $600 to $2,500 |
| Tankless | About 20 years | 8% to 34% more efficient | $1,400 to $3,900 |
| Heat pump | 10 to 15 years | 2 to 3 times more efficient | $1,200 to $3,500 |

### Which one fits your house?

- **Tank:** lowest up-front cost and the simplest swap.
- **Tankless:** endless hot water and a longer life. May need a larger gas line or new venting, which raises the install price.
- **Heat pump:** lowest running cost. ENERGY STAR estimates $550 a year in savings for a family of four. Needs space, usually in a basement, and a place to drain condensation.

### How old is your water heater?

Check the label on the tank. The manufacture date is printed there or coded into the serial number. If it's past 10 years, price a replacement before it fails. A planned swap costs less than an emergency one.

## Does a Plumber Need a License in NJ? How to Check One

> **Quick answer:** Yes. In New Jersey, plumbing may only be done by a licensed master plumber, an authorized plumbing contractor, or employees working under a master plumber's supervision. The master plumber's name and license number must appear on both sides of the truck and on invoices and ads. Check a license at newjersey.mylicense.com/verification.

### Who can do plumbing in NJ?

Under the State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers' rules (N.J.A.C. 13:32):

- **Master plumber:** holds the license. Every plumbing company must have one who owns at least 10% of the business, called the bona fide representative.
- **Journeyman plumber:** has completed a four-year apprenticeship and works under a master plumber.
- **Apprentice:** needs constant on-site supervision.

The only exemption that matters to homeowners: you may do plumbing in your own single-family home.

### What must a NJ plumber show?

- On both sides of the truck: the master plumber's name and "Plumbing license number" or "Plumbing Lic. #" with the number
- On invoices, stationery and ads: the name, license number and New Jersey street address
- A $3,000 bond filed with the state

### How do you check?

Search the plumber or business at [newjersey.mylicense.com/verification](https://newjersey.mylicense.com/verification/) and confirm the license is active. Complaints go to NJ Consumer Affairs at 800-242-5846.

### Do plumbers need home improvement contractor registration?

No. Master plumbers are exempt from New Jersey's home improvement contractor registration because their own board regulates them. The license to check is the plumbing license.

### What's the penalty for unlicensed plumbing?

Up to $10,000 for a first violation and $20,000 for each one after (N.J.S.A. 45:1-25).

## Do You Need a Permit for Plumbing Work in NJ?

> **Quick answer:** Not for repairs and like-for-like replacements. New Jersey treats replacing faucets, valves, traps, toilets and other fixtures, fixing leaks and clearing clogs as ordinary maintenance with no permit. Replacing a water heater or piping, or adding a fixture in an existing space, is "minor work" that needs a permit but can start right away. New systems and larger changes need a regular permit.

### No permit: ordinary maintenance

Under N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7:

- Replacing faucets or faucet parts
- Replacing valves, including shower valves
- Replacing traps
- Replacing a fixture with a similar one, as long as the piping layout doesn't change
- Repairing leaks, including replacing a section of pipe
- Clearing stoppages
- Replacing a hose bib valve
- Replacing a washing machine or dishwasher

### Permit, but work can start: minor work

Under N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.17A:

- Replacing a water heater with one of like capacity
- Replacing existing piping with approved material of like capacity
- Installing a new fixture in an existing space, if the water and drain lines don't need to be upsized

The plumber notifies the town first, files the application within five business days, and the inspection happens within three business days of the request.

### Regular permit

Anything beyond those lists: plumbing for an addition, moving fixtures, and new water or drain systems.

### Who files it?

The licensed master plumber signs and seals the plumbing permit application. A plumber who asks you to pull the permit yourself is a red flag.

## Do You Need a Plumber to Replace a Toilet, Faucet or Dishwasher in NJ?

> **Quick answer:** In New Jersey you can do plumbing yourself in your own single-family home, and replacing a toilet, faucet or dishwasher like for like needs no permit. If you pay someone, state rules say plumbing must be done by a licensed master plumber or their supervised employees. That includes work done for free by someone who isn't the homeowner.

### Quick guide

| Job | Permit in NJ? | DIY in your own single-family home? |
|---|---|---|
| Replace a faucet | No | Yes |
| Replace a toilet with a similar one | No | Yes |
| Replace a shower head or shower valve | No | Yes |
| Replace a garbage disposal with a similar one | No | Yes |
| Replace a dishwasher | No | Yes |
| Add a new fixture where there wasn't one | Yes (minor work) | Yes, with a permit |
| Replace a water heater | Yes (minor work) | Yes, with a permit |
| Connect a gas stove or run gas piping | Ask your town | Hire a licensed professional |

### Can a handyman do plumbing?

New Jersey's plumbing rules say plumbing "shall only be performed" by a master plumber, an authorized plumbing contractor or their supervised employees. The homeowner exemption covers you, not a handyman you hire. Penalties for unlicensed work run up to $10,000 for a first violation.

### When is DIY a bad idea?

- Anything involving gas
- Anything behind a wall you can't easily reopen
- The main shutoff valve, where a mistake floods the house
- When your town requires an inspection you're not prepared to pass

## How Do You Prevent Frozen Pipes, and What Do You Do If One Bursts?

> **Quick answer:** Keep the heat at 55°F or higher even when you're away, let cold water drip from faucets on exposed pipes, open cabinet doors under sinks, and disconnect garden hoses before winter. That's the Red Cross's advice. Water damage and freezing claims average about $15,400, according to the Insurance Information Institute. If a pipe bursts, shut off the main water valve first.

### How to prevent frozen pipes

From the American Red Cross:

- Keep the thermostat at the same temperature day and night
- If you're away, set the heat no lower than 55°F
- Let cold water drip from faucets served by exposed pipes
- Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors so warm air reaches the pipes
- Keep garage doors closed if water lines run through the garage
- Disconnect, drain and store garden hoses. Close the inside valves that feed outdoor faucets

### How do you thaw a frozen pipe?

Keep the faucet open and warm the pipe with a hair dryer, a heating pad or a space heater. Never use an open flame.

### What do you do if a pipe bursts?

1. Shut off the main water valve. Find it now, before you need it.
2. Keep away from standing water near outlets or appliances.
3. Call a licensed plumber.
4. Call your insurer and take photos.

### What does a burst pipe cost?

Repairing the pipe itself runs $1,000 to $4,000 (Angi). The water damage costs far more: insurers paid an average of $15,400 per water damage and freezing claim from 2019 to 2023, and State Farm's frozen pipe claims in 2022 averaged just over $20,000.

## How Much Does Sewer Line Repair Cost, and Who Pays in NJ?

> **Quick answer:** Usually you do. In most New Jersey towns the homeowner owns the sewer lateral, the pipe from the house to the main, sometimes including the part under the street. Replacing a sewer line costs $50 to $250 per foot, or about $2,000 to $10,000 for a typical 40-foot run. Repairs run $150 to $3,800. A camera inspection costs about $125 to $500.

### Who owns the sewer line?

It varies by town, but two NJ examples are typical:

- **Verona:** laterals are entirely owned by the property owner, including the portion within the public right of way.
- **Lindenwold:** the property owner maintains the lateral up to the sewer main.

Call your town or sewer utility before you pay for a repair under the street.

### What does it cost?

| Work | Cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sewer line replacement | $50 to $250 per foot | HomeGuide (Dec 2025) |
| Typical 40-foot replacement | $2,000 to $10,000 | HomeGuide |
| Repair | $150 to $3,800 | HomeGuide |
| Trenchless pipe bursting | $60 to $200 per foot | HomeGuide |
| Trenchless pipe lining | $90 to $250 per foot | HomeGuide |
| Camera inspection | $125 to $500 | HomeGuide |

This Old House (March 2026) puts the average replacement at $3,320.

### What are the signs of a sewer line problem?

- Frequent backups, or several slow drains at once
- Sewage smell inside or in the yard
- Soggy or unusually green patches of lawn
- The same clog coming back

### Should you get a camera inspection?

Yes, before agreeing to a replacement, and before buying an older home. Ask for a copy of the video.

## Snaking vs. Hydro Jetting: Which Does a Clogged Drain Need?

> **Quick answer:** Snaking breaks through a clog and costs $100 to $275 for a single drain, or $200 to $500 for the sewer line. Hydro jetting scours the whole pipe with high-pressure water and costs $600 to $1,400, averaging $1,000. Snake a first-time clog. Consider jetting when the same line keeps backing up, after a camera confirms the pipe is sound.

### How they compare

| | Snaking | Hydro jetting |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Punches a hole through the clog | Cleans the full inside of the pipe |
| Single drain | $100 to $275 | Not typical |
| Main sewer line | $200 to $500 | $600 to $1,400, average $1,000 |
| Good for | One-time clogs, hair, paper | Grease buildup, recurring clogs |

### One clogged drain, or all of them?

- **One fixture is slow:** the clog is in that fixture's drain.
- **Several fixtures back up, or the lowest drain in the house gurgles:** the main line is likely blocked. See [sewer line problems](https://www.ahtown.com/guides/plumbing#sewer-line-repair-cost-nj).

### Does drain cleaning need a permit in NJ?

No. Clearing stoppages is ordinary maintenance under New Jersey's construction code.

### What should you ask?

- Is the price per drain or per hour?
- Will you run a camera if it clogs again?
- If the snake doesn't clear it, what's the next step and price?

**Sources:** HomeGuide, [Cost to unclog a drain](https://homeguide.com/costs/cost-to-unclog-snake-a-drain) and [Hydro jetting cost](https://homeguide.com/costs/hydro-jetting-cost); N.J.A.C. [5:23-2.7](https://law.cornell.edu/regulations/new-jersey/N-J-A-C-5-23-2-7).

## How Much Does a Sump Pump Cost to Install or Replace?

> **Quick answer:** Installing a sump pump averages about $1,100 to $1,400, and replacing an existing one costs $350 to $1,000. A battery backup adds $600 to $2,000. Submersible pumps last 5 to 15 years, and backup batteries 3 to 7. In a New Jersey basement, the backup matters most: storms that flood basements also knock out power.

### What does it cost?

| Work | Cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| New sump pump installation | Average $1,100, range $800 to $1,500 | Angi (2026) |
| New installation | Average $1,400, range $500 to $4,000 | This Old House |
| Replace an existing pump | $350 to $1,000 | Angi |
| Battery backup, installed | $600 to $2,000+ | HomeGuide |
| Water-powered backup | $300 to $1,000 | HomeGuide |

### How long do they last?

| Part | Lifespan |
|---|---|
| Submersible pump | 5 to 15 years |
| Pedestal pump | Up to 30 years |
| Backup battery | 3 to 7 years |

### Do you need a battery backup?

If your basement is finished or stores anything you care about, yes. A standard sump pump runs on house power, and heavy storms are when power fails.

### What should you ask the plumber?

- What size pump does my pit and water volume need?
- Where does the discharge line go?
- Is there an alarm if the pump fails or the water rises?

**Sources:** Angi, [Sump pump installation cost](https://www.angi.com/articles/sump-pump-installation-cost.htm); This Old House, [Sump pump cost](https://www.thisoldhouse.com/plumbing/sump-pump-cost); HomeGuide, [Sump pump battery backup cost](https://homeguide.com/costs/sump-pump-battery-backup-cost).

## Lead Water Pipes in NJ: Who Replaces the Lead Service Line?

> **Quick answer:** Your water utility. New Jersey law requires every water system to find and replace all lead service lines by July 2031, and galvanized lines count as lead. For investor-owned utilities, the cost is spread across all customers. New Jersey American Water says it replaces the customer-owned portion at no direct cost. Government-owned systems may bill the property owner. Check your utility's lookup map.

### What does NJ law require?

Under the 2021 law (P.L. 2021, c.183), as described by NJ DEP:

- Water systems must inventory and replace all lead service lines by July 2031, at an average of 10% a year
- An extension of up to five years is possible
- A galvanized service line is treated as a lead service line

### Who pays?

| Your water system | Who pays |
|---|---|
| Investor-owned utility (for example, New Jersey American Water) | Costs are shared across all customers. NJ American Water says there's no direct cost to you |
| Government-owned system (town or authority) | Costs may be shared across all customers, or may be assessed to the property owner |

Ask your water provider which applies.

### How do you know if you have a lead line?

- Check your utility's address lookup map or self-identification survey
- Do the EPA's quick check where the water line enters your house: lead is soft and dull gray, scratches to a shiny silver with a key or coin, and a magnet won't stick to it

### Can you refuse replacement?

Reportedly yes, but one NJ township's FAQ says owners who refuse must do so again every year through 2031.

### What does a plumber have to do with it?

The utility's contractor replaces the service line. A plumber handles what's inside the house: old galvanized or lead piping, and any repiping. See [repiping costs](https://www.ahtown.com/guides/plumbing#repipe-house-cost).

## How Much Does It Cost to Repipe a House?

> **Quick answer:** Repiping a house costs $1,500 to $15,000, with most jobs around $7,500, according to Angi's 2026 data. Labor is about 70% of the bill. PEX tubing costs $0.40 to $2 a foot versus $2 to $8 for copper. Homes with galvanized steel, lead or gray polybutylene pipes are the usual candidates.

### What drives the price?

| Factor | Detail |
|---|---|
| House size and number of bathrooms | More fixtures, more pipe |
| Pipe material | PEX $0.40 to $2 per foot; CPVC $0.50 to $1; copper $2 to $8 |
| Access | Opening and patching walls and ceilings |
| Permit | $50 to $500 |

One third-party NJ estimate: $4,500 to $11,000.

### Which pipes need replacing?

- **Galvanized steel:** common in older homes. It rusts from the inside and chokes water pressure. NJ treats galvanized service lines as lead lines for replacement purposes.
- **Polybutylene:** gray plastic pipe made from 1978 to mid-1995, often stamped "PB2110." It was installed in up to 10 million U.S. homes and is known for failing.
- **Lead:** replace it. See [lead service lines](https://www.ahtown.com/guides/plumbing#lead-service-lines-nj).

### Does repiping need a permit in NJ?

Yes. Replacing existing piping with approved material of like capacity is minor work, so the plumber can start after notifying the town. An inspection follows.

### What should the quote include?

- Which pipe material, and how much of the house
- Wall and ceiling patching, or not
- Permit and inspection
- How many days you'll be without water

## What Counts as a Plumbing Emergency, and What Does It Cost?

> **Quick answer:** A burst pipe, a sewage backup, no water at all, or a leak you can't stop are emergencies. Shut off the main water valve first, then call. Emergency plumbers average $170 an hour, 1.5 to 3 times the normal rate, plus a $150 to $300 emergency fee. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911.

### What to do first

| Problem | First step |
|---|---|
| Burst or leaking pipe | Shut off the main water valve |
| Overflowing toilet | Turn the valve behind the toilet clockwise |
| Leaking water heater | Shut off its cold water supply and its gas or power |
| Sewage backing up | Stop using water in the house |
| Gas smell | Leave. Call the gas utility or 911 from outside |

### What does an emergency plumber cost?

| Charge | Cost (Angi, Sept 2026) |
|---|---|
| Hourly rate | Average $170, range $100 to $500 |
| Holidays | Up to $600 an hour |
| Emergency service fee | $150 to $300 |

### Can it wait until morning?

If you've shut the water off and nothing is flooding, usually yes. A dripping faucet, a slow drain or a running toilet can wait for regular rates.

### NJ gas emergency numbers

## What Plumbing Should You Fix Before Selling a House in NJ?

> **Quick answer:** Fix every drip, running toilet and slow drain, re-caulk tubs and sinks, and replace dated or crusty faucets and showerheads. Know your water heater's age and your service line material, because buyers and the New Jersey disclosure form ask. A homeowner may do this work in their own single-family home. If you pay someone, New Jersey requires a licensed master plumber.

### The pre-listing plumbing list

| Fix | Typical cost (if you hire it out) |
|---|---|
| Unclog a slow sink, tub or toilet | $100 to $275 (HomeGuide) |
| Repair a running toilet | $140 to $300 (HomeAdvisor) |
| Replace a faucet | $150 to $350 (HomeAdvisor) |
| Fix a leaking pipe | $175 to $550 (Angi) |
| Replace a garbage disposal | $200 to $550 (HomeGuide) |
| Re-caulk a tub or shower | $150 to $300 (HomeGuide, handyman) |

### Which fixtures should you replace?

The ones that look tired: chrome worn to brass, crusted aerators, a showerhead covered in scale. If you're replacing, look for the EPA WaterSense label: no more than 2.0 gallons per minute for showerheads and 1.5 for bathroom faucets.

### What will a buyer ask?

- **Water heater age.** Tank heaters last 10 to 15 years. One near the end will show up in the inspection. See [water heater lifespan](https://www.ahtown.com/guides/plumbing#how-long-water-heaters-last)
- **Lead or galvanized service line.** New Jersey's disclosure form asks about lead plumbing. Check your water utility's service line map. See [lead service lines](https://www.ahtown.com/guides/plumbing#lead-service-lines-nj)
- **Sewer line.** Many buyers order a camera inspection, about $125 to $500. If you know of root or line problems, disclose them. See [sewer line costs](https://www.ahtown.com/guides/plumbing#sewer-line-repair-cost-nj)
- **Past leaks.** Water damage and repairs go on the disclosure form

### Who can do the work?

You can, in your own single-family home. Like-for-like faucet, toilet and showerhead swaps need no permit. A handyman you pay can't do plumbing in New Jersey. See [do you need a plumber](https://www.ahtown.com/guides/plumbing#do-i-need-a-plumber).

## Water and Sewer Line Protection Plans in NJ: Are They Worth It?

> **Quick answer:** Sometimes, if your home is old and still has its original lines. These plans are optional service contracts, not insurance. American Water Resources, which is not owned by New Jersey American Water, lists water line coverage at $5.49 a month and a water, sewer and in-home plumbing bundle at $16.49, as first-year prices. Most exclude problems that existed before you enrolled. Check your homeowners policy first.

### What do the plans cost?

American Water Resources' published prices, first year only, checked October 2026:

| Plan | Per month | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| Water line | $5.49 | $65.88 |
| Sewer line | $9.00 | $108 |
| Water and sewer line | $12.49 | $149.88 |
| Water, sewer and in-home plumbing | $16.49 | $197.88 |
| Total line protection (adds gas and electric lines) | $19.97 | $239.64 |

Prices can vary by ZIP code and change after the first year. If you're paying $40 a month, call and ask exactly which plans you're enrolled in.

### Who sells them?

American Water Resources says it "is not owned by American Water" and uses the name under license. The plans are run by Oncourse Home Solutions. Other companies, such as HomeServe, sell similar plans. Signing up is voluntary. Your water service doesn't depend on it.

### What do they usually leave out?

- Problems that existed before you signed up
- Damage from neglect or misuse
- Lines that don't meet local code
- Waiting periods before you can file a claim. Ask how long
- Caps on how much they pay per repair or per year

### When is a plan worth considering?

The Ohio and Indiana consumer advocates point to the same signs:

- The house is over 40 years old
- The lines are still the originals
- Neighbors on your street have needed line repairs
- Big trees grow near the pipes

The Ohio advocate also notes that line repairs are not common, and many cost less than $500. A full sewer line replacement is the expensive case: about $2,000 to $10,000 for a typical 40-foot run. See [sewer line costs](https://www.ahtown.com/guides/plumbing#sewer-line-repair-cost-nj).

### Do the math

At $16.49 a month you pay about $198 a year. At $40 a month, $480 a year. Ten years at $40 is $4,800, enough to pay for most sewer line repairs outright.

### What should you check first?

1. **Your homeowners policy.** A service line rider may cost less than a plan
2. **Who owns which pipe.** In most NJ towns, you own the sewer lateral from the house to the main
3. **Lead or galvanized lines.** NJ water systems must replace these by July 2031. Don't pay a plan to replace one. See [lead service lines](https://www.ahtown.com/guides/plumbing#lead-service-lines-nj)
4. **The fine print:** caps, deductibles, waiting period, who picks the plumber, and any cancellation fee

### How do you cancel?

Call the company that bills you, not the water utility, unless the charge is on the utility's own bill. Ask whether there's an early cancellation fee and get the cancellation confirmed in writing.

## How to Hire a Plumber in New Jersey: Questions to Ask

> **Quick answer:** Check the master plumber license number, which must be on the truck, the estimate and the invoice. Get written estimates from more than one plumber, ask whether the price is flat or hourly, and confirm who files the permit. The FTC says never to pay in full up front, and treats a contractor who asks you to pull the permit as a red flag.

### Ten questions to ask

1. What's your NJ master plumber license number?
2. Are you insured? Can you send the certificate?
3. Who will do the work: the master plumber, a journeyman or an apprentice?
4. Is this a flat price or hourly? What's the service call fee?
5. What could make the price go up?
6. Does this job need a permit, and will you file it?
7. What brand and model are you installing?
8. What's the warranty on parts and labor?
9. Will you patch any walls you open?
10. What's the payment schedule?

### What does the FTC recommend?

- Consider only contractors who are licensed and insured
- Get multiple written estimates, and don't automatically take the lowest
- Get a written contract
- Never pay the full amount up front

### Red flags

- No license number on the truck or paperwork
- Door-to-door offers
- Pressure to decide right now
- Cash only
- Asking you to pull the permit
